How to Stay Safe After a Storm in Brooklyn Heights

thunderstorm with lightning Storms can include strong windstorms, thunderstorms, snowstorms and more.

Storms can include strong windstorms, thunderstorms, snowstorms and more. Below you will find what to do because of a strong thunderstorm. These Tips will help keep you and your family safe after a storm.

4 Tips for After a Storm

  • Check for gas leaks (better yet, if you have the chance, turn the gas off before the storm hits!)
  • Keep a close eye out for broken glass and exposed nails. Always wear proper shoes and make sure your family members are too, before venturing out to assess damages.
  • You should always assume that any downed power lines are still active, posing a very real threat of electric shock. If you see a downed power line, call your power company, and stay at least 10 feet away at all times from the line.
  • If the disaster happens at night and you go out to inspect your home, use correct lighting from a headlamp or flashlight instead of open flames to survey the damages. If there is a gas leak, open flames increase the potential for an explosion. An open flame, in general, simply increases your risk for fire damage and should be avoided.

Winter storms often call for a lot of snow. Many times, you can expect up to a foot or more of snow during a severe winter storm. If this is the case, it is important to prepare as best you can and stay indoors until the storm dies down. Driving in conditions such as these would cause the risk of danger to be high.

Indoor Safety Tips

Here are some safety tips from Weather.gov:

Stay Inside: When using heat from a fireplace, wood stove, space heater, etc., use fire safeguards and properly ventilate. If you have a gas furnace, make sure it is not not blocked by a snowdrift as soon as it's safe to go out. If you have an upstairs gas furnace which vents out the roof, you may need to turn off the upstairs unit until the snow melts off your roof.

If Your Heat Goes Out

  • Close off unneeded rooms to avoid wasting heat.
  • Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.
  • Close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat.
  • Eat and drink. Food provides the body with energy for producing its own heat. Drink lots of water and other non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic drinks to prevent dehydration. Cold air is very dry.
  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Remove layers to avoid overheating, perspiration and subsequent chill.

How to Prevent Ice Dams in Newburgh Heights

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

Ice dam in roof. Preventing ice dams is key to preventing damage that may occur in your home.

What are ice dams you may ask? According to the University of Minnesota, “An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and other areas.” Preventing ice dams is key to preventing damage that may occur in your home.

Steps to Take to Prevent Ice Dams

Here are some tips from USAA to help prevent ice dams:

  • Eliminate heat sources under the roof, such as lights and heaters in the attic, that can contribute to thawing.
  • Keep the attic cool and ventilated to stop or slow the refreezing cycle.
  • Consult a roofing professional to remove snow or standing water before an ice dam can form.
  • Invest in a roof rake, a tool that allows you to stand on the ground and safely brush snow off the roof.
  • Avoid trying to chip any ice dams off your roof, as you could damage the roof. Ask a roof specialist for help instead.
  • Talk with your roof specialist about sealing the roof deck with a moisture barrier.
